Bank Machine Condemns Scaremongering In ATM Crime Reports
Bank Machine Operations Director Debbie Smyth yesterday condemned scaremongering in relation to ATM crime.
"There was a report that hit the media the other day that ATM card-related crime is running at the rate of 80 million pounds per annum". Notes Debbie "However, no mention is made of the amount of cash dispensed from ATMs each year. This is surely relevant in assessing the significance of the losses to criminals".
Debbie goes on "In fact, ATMs in the UK will dispense around 200 BILLION pounds in cash in 2006. That means that ATM card-connected crime will amount to significantly less than 0.05 per cent of the cash dispensed by ATMs this year".
Bank Machine Managing Director Ron Delnevo confirms, "The figures show that ATMs are very secure. So long as customers take simple precautions e.g. not divulging their pin numbers to anyone else and concealing their hands as they enter their pins in ATMs, the chances of suffering a loss are very slight. In the highly unlikely event that there is any problem, the Card Issuers will almost invariably make-good the amount involved.
